Article: Why We Built Tails Co-Op

Why We Built Tails Co-Op
By Dr. Michelle Frye, Founder of Tails Co-Op
I've been a veterinarian long enough to know something that most pet owners never think about: the people who care for your animals often can't afford to care for their own.
Vet techs making $16 an hour. Shelter workers stretching every paycheck. Groomers, trainers, kennel staff — people who chose this work because they love animals, not because it pays well. And yet when their own dog gets sick or their cat needs bloodwork, they face the same prices as everyone else.
That never sat right with me.
The Problem We Kept Seeing
Over the years at Kedi Labs, we watched talented colleagues make impossible choices. Skip the diagnostics they knew their pet needed. Delay treatment because the bill was too high. Some even surrendered animals because they simply couldn't afford the care.
These are people who spend their entire workday keeping other people's pets healthy. The irony is brutal.
We looked at the existing options — pet insurance with its exclusions and deductibles, discount cards that barely move the needle, employer benefits that almost no one in this industry offers. None of it was built for the reality of what pet professionals actually earn.
So We Built Something Different
Tails Co-Op is a membership cooperative. Not insurance. Not a discount program. It's a community of verified pet professionals pooling their buying power to access veterinary services — telemedicine, diagnostics, prescriptions — at prices that reflect what they actually earn.
For $100 a year, members get coverage for themselves and up to five personal pets. Credentialed members also get access to Smarty Vets, a telemedicine platform they can use with their own clients, plus Smarty Tests for diagnostic ordering and prescription fulfillment shipped to their door.
We kept it simple on purpose. One membership. One price. No surprise bills, no claims to file, no pre-authorization hoops.
Why a Co-Op?
We chose the cooperative model because it aligns incentives the right way. Tails Co-Op exists to serve its members, not to generate profit for shareholders. As the membership grows, we can negotiate better pricing and add more benefits. The value flows back to the people who pay in.
It also means the community is the product. When you verify your professional credentials to join, you're joining a network of people who understand your work, your challenges, and your world. The members-only Circle community is where that connection happens — a space to share knowledge, ask questions, and support each other.
Who This Is For
If you're a vet tech, veterinarian, shelter worker, groomer, trainer, breeder, or boarding/daycare staff member — this was built for you. We verify every member to keep the community focused and the pricing exclusive.
If you know someone in pet care who's been putting off vet visits for their own animals, send them our way.
What Comes Next
We're launching with founding member pricing — $100/year, locked in for life. No price increases, ever. As we grow, we'll add more benefits, more partnerships, and more tools. But the founding members who believe in this from day one will always get the best deal.
This is just the beginning. But it's a beginning built on a simple idea: the people who care for animals deserve someone caring for them, too.
